Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities (SFSC)
Parenting Programme
What is it?
An evidence based group work programme for all parents/carers of children aged 0-18 years, designed to promote good parenting and better outcomes for children and their families.
Who for?
The SFSC programme is unique in its inclusive approach to engaging all parents of children 0-18. It is readily adaptable, for example in Wandsworth we have delivered it specifically for fathers; for mothers affected by domestic abuse; and in the Urdu and Somali languages. It is run in a range of settings across the borough and it is appropriate for parents with universal up to complex needs.
Practical details
A 13 week 3 hourly group delivered by two trained facilitators for up to 12 parents/carers who receive a parent manual during the group and a certificate at the end. Manuals are available in many community languages, ‘easy words and pictures’ and large print.
Aims
To help families increase parenting skills through developing a better understanding of child development and using positive discipline techniques. To increase parental confidence, achieve positive change in family relationships, decrease isolation and increase community involvement.
Theories underpinning
It draws on social learning theory and behavioural theories and uses interactive learning methods.
History/background
It is adapted from ‘Strengthening multi-ethnic families: a violence prevention programme’ developed by psychologist Marilyn Steele in Los Angeles in 1993. Extensively used to reach, retain and impact on black and minority ethnic parents but found to work well with everyone. It has been promoted in Britain since 2000 by the Race Equality Foundation.
What Parents say
“I am a lot calmer now, I’m not shouting and my children are responding to this.”
“My kids say I’ve changed so much, what a big difference it has made.”
“I feel more confident in my role as a mother and enjoy it more.”
“I used to smack my child but now I feel I have so many other ways to manage and support my child.”
