Counselling & Support
What is counselling?
Counselling is a form of talking therapy that provides support and guidance to help people cope with trauma. It provides a safe, confidential space focusing on the individual survivor giving them space to talk about issues of their concern. Counselling is not about giving advice or telling people what to do. Instead, it provides a space to express, explore and understand different perspectives on one’s experiences. Attending counselling is a matter of free choice, when and if the survivor feels the need to do so.
Who is the counselling service for?
Delivered by BPS (British Psychological Society) and BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) accredited therapists, our 1:1 individually tailored and culturally sensitive counselling sessions in Arabic, Amharic, English, Farsi, Kurdish, Sorani and Tigrinya provide a safe and confidential space for vulnerable Black and Minoritised women who are at risk of domestic violence and harmful practices and live in extreme poverty and/or are at risk of homelessness. Through its counselling programme, KMEWO seeks to ensure that women who have experienced loss, VAWG and HP related trauma, sexual exploitation, war, torture and persecution are supported in their journey towards safety, recovery and rebuild.
Who are the counsellors?
All counsellors are accredited members of a recognised professional body. They adhere to the BPS (British Psychological Society) and the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) code of ethics, while they receive regular clinical supervision. All counsellors are trained and experienced on how to work with Violence against Women and Girls incidents.
